It was an instrumental jam that Bowie was working on, Lennon sang “aim” at one point, Bowie heard it, decided “fame” was better, and wrote the rest of the song. Lennon and Ono tried to claim full writing credit. Speaking of trying to claim credit, there’s a documentary called The United States vs John Lennon that’s supposed to be flattering but it’s, umm.... not.... The thing I remember most was John Lennon claiming that he was responsible for the anti-war movement during Vietnam and really seeming to believe it.
